What is Science?

Science is the broad and balanced study of the biological, chemical and physical aspects of our planet and solar Science A levelsystem. Science is all around us every day. It has shaped our planet and the way we live our lives. As well as the three main science subjects, the course also incorporates aspects of earth and environmental science.

The course is suitable for those students who have no need, or no wish, to specialise in the separate sciences, but have an interest in continuing their study of science for any one of a number of valid reasons. For example, those whose jobs, although not primarily scientific, will involve some contact with science (e.g. archaeologists, occupational therapists, science journalists).

The course aims to build upon the material covered in GCSE and give the student the knowledge and confidence to reach scientifically informed opinions about articles and other sources of information which as members of the general public, or in their jobs, they are likely to encounter.

What other subjects go well with Science?

Science is a broad discipline that can be extremely useful in many different professions and which combines well with many different subjects. However, Mathematics, Geography, Psychology and Sociology would be particularly good complementary subject choices.

What will I gain from studying the subject?

Students will develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of science, an understanding of scientific methods, an awareness of advances in technology, and will come to recognise that science is a human endeavour that interacts with a variety of social, economic and industrial issues. The 'A' level course thus represents an excellent preparation for a wide range of degree courses and careers.

Do I have an aptitude for the subject?

Science 'A' level does require a basic competence in algebra and statistics but does not demand knowledge of calculus. Students should have previously achieved at least a grade CC at GCSE Science double award or be able to demonstrate they have an adequate knowledge and understanding of science from earlier studies. Enjoyment and enthusiasm for all aspects of science is the key to success in this subject.
