What are Modern Languages?

French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese are taught at the college each year. Teaching in other languages may be provided as required, Dutch, Hebrew, Korean and Turkish courses having been amongst those successfully arranged in the recent past. The language specifications of all the main examination boards aim to develop linguistic capabilities to the point where the speaker can exist comfortably in a foreign-language environment. Since much of the writing has to be done in the target foreign language, emphasis is placed on acquiring a solid understanding of grammar and an appreciation of the need for accuracy. There is also a great deal of importance attached to communication skills, which attract a high percentage of the overall marking. The student will also learn about contemporary issues in the countries speaking the target language or choose to study literature either thematically or by choice of author.
