What is Mathematics?

Mathematics is a subject which deals with abstract structures. Some of these arise in scientific theories while others are familiar from everyday life; a few are studied by mathematicians purely for their intrinsic beauty.

The Mathematics department at Oxford Tutorial College caters for a wide variety of subject options, including Pure Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Decision Mathematics.

What other subjects go well with Mathematics?

Mathematics is commonly combined with Biology or Chemistry 'A' level and enjoys a particular affinity with Physics. It also complements Economics, Business Studies, Computing and Psychology.

What will I gain from studying the subject?

Mathematics students learn to think logically and to apply the principles they have learnt to the solution of a variety of different problems. This training is of great value as preparation for a wide range of degree courses and careers. Mathematics 'A' level is a requirement for most Engineering courses; it is most helpful, and may be required, for Economics and Business courses. A knowledge of 'A' level Statistics is applicable to almost any course in the social sciences.

Do I have an aptitude for the subject?

You should be happy with abstract concepts and fairly good at mental arithmetic.
GCSE Mathematics or an equivalent, preferably at grade A or B, is an essential foundation for the course.
