What is History?
History is a dynamic subject, with each generation of historians re-examining the past and finding new questions to ask in the context of the present. Students learn to read critically and to argue coherently. They are soon able to establish a sound factual framework for their chosen period. Within this they are taught to develop their powers of analysis in relation to key historical concepts such as cause and consequence, or continuity and change.
What other subjects go well with History?
History combines well with a wide range of other subjects including Modern and Classical Languages, Politics, Economics, Sociology, Law and English.
What will I gain from studying the subject?
Through an understanding of the past, students are better able to comprehend the world in which they live and the forces that have helped shape it. They learn to sort information effectively, to argue persuasively, and to write clearly, succinctly and with relevance. These skills will serve them well as the basis for a wide range of degree courses and in a variety of careers, including law, journalism, administration and business.
Do I have an aptitude for the subject?
You should have an interest in the past and a willingness to consider carefully a number of possible interpretations of events. History suits those with an enquiring mind who want to test the evidence on any given question before accepting a particular explanation. You should be prepared to undertake independent reading and research, under the guidance of your tutor.
