What is Computing?
Computing is one of the fastest-changing areas of applied technology. The course aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the main elements of computing, such as hardware and information processing, and the current applications of computing in a variety of contexts. The focus of the course is to nurture confidence and competence in the practical use of computer-based systems to develop solutions for real-world problems. In addition, we consider the social, economic and legal implications of using computer-based systems. The college has a range of machines equipped with market leading applications, and the practical aspect of the course accounts for 30-40% of the final marks, depending on which examination board is used. No previous computing experience is required for this course.
What other subjects go well with Computing?
Computing is increasingly used in most disciplines, although it is particularly useful for students of Mathematics, Sciences, Psychology, Business Studies, Economics and Accounting.
What will I gain from studying the subject?
The student acquires an up-to-date knowledge of computing technology, and develops the practical skills needed to apply this effectively. These studies prepare the student for a wide range of degree courses and professional careers.
Do I have an aptitude for the subject?
This subject requires good basic numeracy, and a logical and analytical approach to solving problems. All the Mathematics required is covered on the course. Students need to write a substantial report documenting their coursework, for which a reasonable standard of written English is required.
