What is Communication Studies?
Communication is an activity that involves more than just words. The AS level Communication Studies introduces those processes, practices and skills, which enable effective communication. AS Communication Studies may be used as a final qualification to broaden other studies at this level.
A2 builds on the knowledge and skills acquired at AS, to develop practical competencies for communicating in media forms. In addition the A2 level of study intends to widen students' understanding of the relationship between culture, society and communication.
What other subjects go well with Communication Studies?
Communication Studies 'A' level offers subject content which is distinct, yet it complements a range of studies in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities; subjects such as English, Sociology and Business Studies would be good complementary studies. It can also usefully represent a contrasting discipline when combined with study in other areas.
What will I gain from studying the subject?
Communication Studies provides students with the opportunity to acquire key skills in communication, numeracy and information technology. The subject allows candidates to develop skills that are desirable in many areas of employment, such as teaching, personnel work, social work and public relations. It represents a particularly good basis for degree courses in Communications, Media Studies and related social sciences.
Do I have an aptitude for the subject?
You should have an interest in the way we as human beings interact with each other. You will develop analytical skills by interpreting different forms of texts. You will conduct a research project and present your material to a small audience, thereby developing presentation skills.
