What is Art?
This course enables the student to specialise in studying the practical skills of drawing and painting. However, it is also possible to study sculpture, photography, graphic design, fashion and textile drawing. A combination of group practical work and individual tuition allows students to develop their own ideas in line with the course specification. Students are encouraged to place their work in context by visiting galleries and by studying the history of art.
What other subjects go well with Art?
Art combines well with a wide range of subjects, but particularly with Art History and Film or Media Studies. The substantial practical element will appeal to those who enjoy this aspect of other subjects such as Music or Design. Equally, for students taking more theoretical subjects, the practical aspects of Art can provide variety and balance in their programme of study.
What will I gain from studying the subject?
This course can lead on to degree courses in Art and Design, normally via a one-year Art foundation course. Alternatively, an Art qualification is useful for degree courses and careers in architecture, the media, fashion design and interior design.
Do I have an aptitude for the subject?
We would normally expect students to have taken the subject at GCSE level and achieved an upper grade but it is not uncommon for students to present a folder of work as an alternative to show aptitude.
