Welfare

Each student at Oxford Tutorial College has a personal tutor; this is always a member of the APP staff for international students.  The personal tutor is usually the point of contact for any difficulties, whether academic or personal.  For more sensitive and personal issues, we also have a dedicated welfare support officer at Oxford TutorialCollege.  An appointment can be made at any time during working hours, and priority is given to situations demanding more immediate support and advice.  In certain circumstances, with the consent of student and parents, we may enlist the help of an independent counsellor, such meetings being entirely confidential. The method of teaching on the Academic Preparation Program aims to instill self belief and confidence in each student, and tutors also endeavour to make the work approachable and enjoyable.  Positive and supportive academic supervision enables students to discuss concerns about their work, helping students in a practical and balanced way.  In cases where a difficulty has arisen with a domestic or personal situation, it is also vital that students are able to seek help.  International students have very different needs from those of UK students.  Unique to the Academic Preparation Program, we offer a comprehensive, useful and fun orientation week in September to help students adjust to their lives in the UK.  Throughout the course thereafter, students learn all about living in the UK safely and happily.  All members of the APP team are available and more than happy to offer advice and support to our students.

Health Care

International students may find it difficult to register themselves for access to healthcare, and are thus guided through the process as a group during their orientation week.  We have access to an excellent team of health practitioners in Oxford.  Students must be registered with a doctor in the UK in order to receive free treatment in case of an accident.  Medical treatment on the NHS is generally free to students (except for more complicated medical treatments such as those involving hospital stays).  However, please note that it is essential to take out medical insurance before leaving home to cover hospital stays or return home in the event of accident or illness.  This can normally be done by extending an existing policy.

Other Arrangements

Students get a great deal of support both prior to and during their studies at OTC.  Students may prefer to be greeted at the airport on their arrival (for an additional fee), or may choose to make their way to Oxford themselves.  During orientation week, students are assisted in basic matters such as registering with the police, opening a bank account, taking local public transport (or getting a bicycle), and getting familiar with Oxford.
